Why is there no water in my shower when I turn it on?

The unexpected turn of events was that when I turn on my shower, the water would just barely come out no matter if it was hot or cold water. There is only one valve in my shower and this controls the cold and hot water. I thought the problem lied in the shower valve, but boy I was wrong.
